L'Oréal has devoted considerable effort to environmental protection for many years.

At the UK manufacturing site in Llantrisant, South Wales, continued efforts are made to reduce waste and conserve energy. In fact, the factory now recycles and / or reuses 93% of all waste generated at the plant. This dramatic improvement in recent years has come about as a result of combustible waste being used as fuel for steam / electricity generation at municipal incineration sites, and because plastic, polythene, wood, steel and cardboard are now being used and / or recycled.
Packaging is one of the most tangible aspects of environmental policy and an area in which fundamental changes are taking place. CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) were removed from all L'Oréal aerosol products in 1989. More recently the weight of Elvive bottles has been reduced, resulting in a saving in the UK of some 32 tonnes of plastic per year for shampoo bottles and 25 tonnes of plastic for conditioners.

At the administrative sites of L'Oréal, specific measures have been introduced to facilitate recycling and to reduce waste. Efforts to reduce energy consumption include controlling lighting by movement detection. L'Oréal staff are encouraged to participate in the protection of the environment as good working practice. Safety and Environment competitions are organised on an annual basis both nationally and internationally. These serve as an important source of information for the Group on environmental protection initiatives being taken by L'Oréal subsidiaries throughout the world.
